Food, Climate & Natural Resources

Ending hunger and protecting livelihoods in a changing world

Hunger in a World of Plenty

Nearly 1 billion people go to bed hungry every night, not due to a lack of food, but because of deep inequality in how food is produced, distributed, and accessed.

From corporate-controlled food markets to gender-based wage gaps and environmental degradation, the injustice is clear: those who grow the food are often the ones who eat last—especially women.

A Broken System

The global food system is failing the most vulnerable.

  • Climate change makes it harder to grow food, causing floods, droughts, and rising sea levels.
  • Corporate power controls the supply chain, while small farmers get less than 5% of the profits.
  • Women farmers, who produce much of the world’s food, are often unpaid, unsupported, and unheard.
  • Natural resources like land, water, and forests are being seized or polluted—leaving poor communities displaced and powerless.

The Crisis by the Numbers

  • 821 million people face chronic food deprivation
  • 20 million were on the brink of starvation in East Africa in 2017
  • <5% of profits from goods like bananas or tea reach small farmers
  • 100–150 million fewer people could go hungry if women farmers had equal resources
  • 1 in 5 Indigenous communities legally own the land they manage
